THE GOAL
Be the first to play out all your cards. Cards left in your opponent's hand count against them, and the first player whose total reaches 101 points loses the match.
THE DEAL
Gonga is played with two full decks plus four jokers (108 cards). Each player is dealt 10 cards; the rest form the face-down stock, with one card turned up to start the discard pile.
YOUR TURN
1. Draw one card from the stock or the top of the discard pile. 2. Lay down any melds you can, and patch cards onto melds already on the table. 3. Discard one card to end your turn. You must always keep at least one card to discard. You cannot play out your whole hand by melding alone.
MELDS
A meld is three or more cards, either: • A set: the same rank in different suits, e.g. 7♠ 7♥ 7♦. • A run: consecutive ranks in one suit, e.g. 4♥ 5♥ 6♥. Aces count high or low, but not both. A 2 3 and Q K A are runs, but K A 2 is not.
A set A run Not a run PATCHING
You can add cards to any meld on the table, including your opponent's. For example, add the fourth suit to a set or the next card to either end of a run.
JOKERS
A joker stands in for any card. If you hold the real card a melded joker is standing in for, you can patch that card in and take the joker into your hand. In a run the joker is fixed to the exact slot shown; in a set it can be claimed by its rank in any suit not already on the table.
Here, the joker stands in for the 6♥. Add that card to the run to take the joker. SCORING
When a player discards their last card the hand ends, and the opponent scores the cards still in their hand: cards from 2 to 10 at face value, J, Q, K and Ace 10 each, jokers 20. Hands repeat, totals accumulate, and the first player to reach 101 loses the match.
POINTS FOR CARDS LEFT IN YOUR HAND
2 to 10 The number on the card J, Q, K, A 10 Joker 20 In games against the computer with three or four players, the limit is 151 points. Players drop out when they reach it, and the last player left wins.
